Why I Uploaded My Porn to JustForFans Instead of OnlyFans

Why I Uploaded My Porn to JustForFans Instead of OnlyFans

OnlyFans has name recognition, but that’s not enough

The weirdest thing about putting my porn online is how normal it felt.

I expected to have some big emotions about it. I could picture myself feeling hesitant before uploading my clips. Or maybe feeling worried and nervous about the whole thing. At least some butterflies fluttering around in my stomach.

Nope. None of that.

My porn went live and it just felt like another day.

A day where I started selling videos of myself masturbating, playing with toys, getting fucked, and sucking cock. But other than that, a pretty normal day.

Part of the reason it didn’t feel like a big deal is that I’ve been working my way up to this for a very long time.

About fourteen years ago, I looked into the application process to become a Suicide Girl. I had colorful hair and a few tattoos. And I was willing to get more of them if it meant I could start flashing my tits and arching my back for their site.

I didn’t end up going through with it, but the desire to make porn stuck with me. This year, I got a lot more serious about it.

I had been filming myself already. It was a dirty little hobby to help me pass the time. It was tough, because making good porn is a lot harder than it looks. But I love a good, creative challenge so I kept at it.

I kept at it long enough that I had a few videos that I thought were pretty decent.

So I stopped messing around and started planning. I looked into ways to share my porn and started planning out my content.

That’s the other big reason it didn’t feel like a big deal when I finally put my porn online. For the weeks leading up to it, I had been completely focused on technical details. I stopped asking myself if I should upload porn and I started wondering exactly how I would do it.

I had to think long and hard about what kinds of things I would be comfortable doing on camera for now, and what sort of things I’d have to work my way up to eventually.

I had to choose whether I would use a subscription-based site, sell individual clips, or do a bit of both.

Deciding on a price for my porn also took up a lot of mental energy. It’s not like there’s an industry standard for amateur porn scenes.

I also looked into posting to tube sites to see if it would be worth my while and decided it wasn’t the right choice for me.

But while I was filming new videos, coming up with new scene ideas, and spending hours googling why the lighting in my bedroom sucked and what I could do about it, there was one question I was sure was settled. I didn’t think twice about where I’d post it. I’d start an OnlyFans account, just like every other girl who doesn’t mind flashing her tits for the internet.

As a user, I love OnlyFans. I follow a few girls on there and it’s been nothing but fun.

But once I started looking into it more, I realized that OnlyFans wasn’t the right place for me to start my porn sidehustle.

I ended up creating a JustForFans account instead and I’m really glad I did. These are the biggest reasons why.

OnlyFans Doesn’t Have a Real Storefront

There are basically two ways to sell your porn on OnlyFans.

The main one is to post to your feed and sell subscriptions to it. That way, anyone who pays to access your content can scroll through and check out everything you uploaded.

The other way is through their Pay Per View (PPV) option.

That’s the option I would have used because I decided to sell individual clips instead of offering content on a subscription basis.

I haven’t been doing this long enough to feel confident that I can regularly conceive, shoot, edit, and upload porn often enough to justify charging a subscription. I also tend to freeze and get less productive when I feel too much pressure, and having paying subscribers would be a one-way street to feeling that pressure.

I want to be able to make porn when I’ve got the energy for it, and not have to upload anything if I’m not in the right mood for it.

So, my initial plan was to start a free OnlyFans account and only use it to sell PPVs.

But the problem is that selling a PPV is kind of like running a clip store where everything is a limited time offer. OnlyFans creators can send unlockable videos or photo sets via DM. If you’re subscribed, you can pay to unlock them and start getting yourself off to whatever hot content they made available.

That means if you don’t have an active subscription when that DM goes out, you miss out on the chance to purchase their PPV content.

The only workaround I could think of was to pin a post letting people know what videos I’ve got for sale, so they could DM and ask me to send whatever they wanted. But that would mean anyone who wanted to buy my porn would have to wait until I was around to give it to them. And I dunno about you, but that’s not the way I like to buy porn - I want access to it when I’m in the mood to jill off.

That’s how I first came across JustForFans. I was looking for a site that I could essentially use as a clip store. A place where I could upload my porn whenever I felt like it and people could buy it whenever they felt like accessing it.

Like OnlyFans, JustForFans is primarily a subscription service. The point is to find hot naked people and pay to access their feed where they do hot naked people stuff.

But they also have a store feature, which lets performers sell clips and physical items like underwear and stuff like that.

Even better, you can set the store to be the first thing people see when they go to your profile instead of your feed. So, that’s what I did. I made my store front and center so that my clips are easy to access all the time.

OnlyFans Limits Your Discoverability

One of the things that really surprised me when I started using OnlyFans is that there’s no way to browse the site.

There’s a search option, but it will only help you find people’s usernames and handles.

Unless you already know who you’re looking for, it’s basically impossible to find someone new to follow through OnlyFans.

That means creators have to do all of their own promotion. They have to post to Twitter, Reddit, or wherever and hope that people check out their profile.

That wouldn’t have been a deterrent for me because I’ve already got an audience. I have a blog and I host a podcast, and I’m pretty sure that’s how almost everyone who will find my porn is going to come across it.

Still, it sucks knowing that no one can really stumble on your stuff. Unless you’re putting it directly under their noses, no one will find it.

That’s another perk of going with JustForFans. There are lots of different ways to browse and find new people to get off to. You can scroll through profiles, look for specific types of performers, or search for keywords to find exactly what you’re into.

And that’s great for someone like me because I’m not exactly pornstar material. I’m a lot more niche than that.

I’m a shy chubby mom. I’m a DDlg middle with a few specific kinks. I also get weirdly focused when I jerk off my husband, even on camera.

That’s not everyone’s cup of tea. But if all of that is someone’s jam, I want them to be able to find me. On JustForFans, they just might.

I Actually Trust JustForFans

Even before making porn, I was dealing with bullshit from platforms because my content is all sex-focused.

I had to move my newsletter from Mailchimp to Substack because the Mailchimp algorithm would lock me out of my account. I wasn’t actually violating any of their terms or anything, but I was writing about porn which flagged my content as suspicious.

I also had to start doing less on Instagram and making my captions a lot more euphemistic when they changed their guidelines to make their platform cleaner.

I haven’t had to stop writing on Medium yet but I can’t promote adult content there the way I used to because their updated rules prohibit it.

It’s like being the ball in a shell game. I constantly have to move around because I never know which platform is going to ban me or put in more sex-negative restrictions.

You’d think OnlyFans would be the exception. If there’s one place where it’s safe to do sex stuff, it should be the platform that’s basically become a shorthand for amateur porn.

But I don’t trust them.

Even when sex workers started making it on OnlyFans and making bank for the site, they still pretended that it was a site primarily geared toward mainstream influencers. As if it was just an alternative to Patreon and not basically Patreon for porn.

They’re also planning to court investors. And when investors get involved, that’s often when companies get cold feet about their adult content.

There’s talk of them distancing themselves from adult content. Since they already do that, I don’t know what that could mean other than restricting it or banning it outright.

And that’s probably the biggest reason I didn’t choose to host my porn on OnlyFans. I don’t want to feel like a dirty little secret again. I don’t want to have to worry that I’ll wake up one day and find out that they put in anti-porn rules. Or worse, to have my account banned because they start enforcing rules before they announce them (sadly, that kind of shit happens on some platforms).

I don’t trust OnlyFans not to turn their backs on sex workers. But I do trust JustForFans because it’s a site built by sex workers and designed specifically for them. I even came across a recent JustForFans job posting for a customer support position that specified that they were specifically looking to hire sex workers.

In fact, you can’t even create a JustForFans page unless you use it for porn. I found that out when I went through the verification process.

It required me to have a complete profile, specify my pronouns, and show proof of ID. Other than that, they just needed proof that I was actually there to sell porn. That meant having a Twitter account that demonstrated some sort of sex stuff (mine was fine, even though I never actually posted porn on it) and uploading some porn.

Specifically, they recommended having at least five adult videos that were three minutes or longer.

I posted my smut, submitted it for verification, and waited a few days for them to verify my account.

The waiting was actually the hardest part. I like to get shit done quickly and I don’t handle that sort of thing well. I spent most of the weekend refreshing my email inbox to see if I had been approved.

As impatient as I was, the verification process is actually reassuring. It shows that they’re serious about being a platform for sex workers. I know they’ll never ban my account because it’s full of sex stuff since that’s the entire stated purpose of the site.

We Need More Sex Positive Online Spaces

There were a couple of things that made me hesitate before settling on JustForFans.

The first one is the payout. Every platform that handles transactions is going to take some kind of cut for processing fees, running their site, turning a profit - all the usual things.

The amount they keep depends on exactly what you’re selling, but for everything I’d be using it for, JustForFans will take a 30% cut from everything. OnlyFans only takes 20%, which means I would either be able to charge a bit less or keep a little more.

But even that wasn’t really a point in OnlyFans’ favor because I’m planning to do this long-term. And in the long run, I hope to become a JustForFans Exclusive model (which requires me to not put my content on any other adult fansites and to have a few months of posting history on JustForFans). That comes with a few perks, but the big one is getting to keep 85% of the payouts, which is even better than what you could get from OnlyFans.

I also had to find a workaround for the subscription model. I just wanted to host a clip store and nothing else, but there’s no way to turn off the subscription option.

I also couldn’t offer it for free. I had to set a price between $4 and $50 per month.

So, I set it to the maximum price and decided to post every single clip I release to my timeline. That way, if anyone actually wants to pay the $50 subscription price, they get more than $50 worth of my content. It’s basically like paying for my porn in bulk.

But that’s it, and those aren’t big deals at all.

The more I looked into JustForFans, the more I realized it was the obvious choice. It’s clear to me why it’s OnlyFans’s biggest competitor. If it wasn’t for OnlyFans having better name recognition, I’m pretty sure everyone who wanted to sell porn would do it on JustForFans.

I’m really glad I discovered the site because I feel so much better in sex-positive online spaces. I’ve only been writing about sex for a couple of years but I’m already tired of dealing with platforms who think it’s perfectly okay to boot off sex workers or act like adult content isn’t suitable for adults.

Sometimes I settle for them. Because a boring Instagram is better than no Instagram, I guess.

With JustForFans, I don’t have to make those kinds of compromises to share my porn. I might get booted from a platform or two for being a naughty girl. But at least on JustForFans, that’s exactly what they want me to be.

(Since posting this, I’ve significantly reduced the price of my subscriptions. I’m now offering it for $9.99!)

If you want to check out my porn, you can find all of it on my JustForFans page. You can watch me play with sex toys, fuck my husband, and try to guess lube flavors while I suck them off his cock (spoiler: I’m terrible at it)!
